How to play Snap!

  • Two players, one phone: sit opposite each other with the phone flat between you. Red has the bottom half, Green the top.
  • Take turns: tap your half to flip your top card onto the middle pile.
  • When the top two cards match, hit your SNAP button first to win the whole pile. A wrong snap gives the other player one of your cards.
  • Win every card, or hold the most after 3 minutes.

52 cards: 13 pictures, four of each, dealt into two face-down piles. Red has the bottom half of the screen, Green the top. Players take turns to flip, but either player can snap at any time. A wrong snap also locks your button for a moment. Unranked: there's no score to beat, only the person across the table. Opens once 16 doors have a star.

Bonus game: opens once you have at least one star on 16 doors. Two-player games are just for fun and never go on a leaderboard.

Tips for a big score

  1. Watch the pile on your opponent's turn too. Either player can snap the moment a match appears, and when you win a pile, your opponent flips next.
  2. If it's your turn and a match is already showing, snap, don't flip. Flipping puts a new card on top and buries the match, throwing away a pile you could have won.
  3. Don't hammer the button. A wrong snap hands over one of your cards and locks your SNAP button for a moment, and a real match could turn up while you are locked out. With 13 pictures in the deck, matches come often enough to wait for a sure one.

The real story: Snap, the Victorian-era race to shout first

Snap is one of the simplest card games there is, and one of the noisiest. In the traditional version, the cards are dealt out as evenly as possible and players keep them face down without looking; in turn, each player turns over the top card of their pile, and when two face-up cards match, the first player to shout "snap!" takes them [1]. Shout snap when there's no match and you pay for it: in the classic rules your face-up pile goes into the middle as a "snap pool" that someone else can win [1].

The card game rules site Pagat says Snap seems to have first appeared towards the end of the 19th century, and may have begun as a simpler, faster version of an older game called Snip Snap Snorum [1].

Our version keeps the race and drops the shouting: the phone sits flat on the table between you, each player gets a big SNAP button on their own half, and the deck is pure Aussie Christmas. Matching a pair of Nans is worth the whole pile.
