Dad: tongs in hand, barbie on wheels
Bucket hat, apron, tongs. Will not stand still with the barbie.
Dad is in charge of the barbie (the barbecue), and he takes it very seriously. Bucket hat with his sunnies on the brim, a striped apron over a Christmas shirt, thongs (flip-flops) and a pair of tongs he holds up like a trophy. He's a soft-drink man at the barbie, and his idea of a big Christmas is a perfect row of snags (sausages).
Snag Toss, Day 19
In Snag Toss Santa flings snags out of the esky (the cool box) and tries to land them on Dad's hotplate. The trouble is Dad. He keeps wheeling the barbie about the backyard, rolling it in at different heights, from down on the grass right up to the top of the scaffold, so you have to lead your throw to where the plate will be.
Land one in the centre ring for 300, the middle ring for 150 and the edge for 50. Bullseyes in a row build a combo, and the last 10 seconds are worth double. While you throw, Dad cooks: the snags go from raw to brown, and every so often he flicks one over with the tongs.
Get a bullseye and Dad fist-pumps. Miss the plate, though, and the snag lands on the grass, where the kelpie is already waiting. It scores nothing, the dog gallops in and eats it, and Dad clutches his face like he's just watched the cricket go wrong.
